Youth Project
Background
The Youth project is a key component of the club's long term vision. We want to attract young people to the sport of bowling by encouraging them to engage with the club and their environment.
Health and Wellbeing Initiative.
The Scottish Government has now identified obesity as a major long term health risk to our society and in particular, the female population. Research has identified the decline of active participative sport as a major contributing factor. To reverse this trend, the government has targeted those sports which offer the opportunity for regular fresh air and exercise.
Glasgow District Council's department of Culture & Sport (C&S) is responsible for sporting facilities through their partnership programme. The club has made efforts to engage with C&S to provide bowling facilities to schools within the Partick and Hillhead area. If you attend a school within the area, please speak to your representatives or contact the club coach.
Scottish Bowling Association (SBA) Youth Development.
The SBA are the national controlling body for bowling in Scotland and have a well established youth programme managed by the Scottish Bowling Coaching Committee (SBCC) . Part of their remit is to promote and develop talented players for National and Commonwealth teams. The club coaching scheme is the grass roots tier of this programme. Please refer to the Coaching page for more details.
Active Schools Project
The Active Schools project is an initiative sponsored by the Government in partnership with the departments of Heath and Education to promote participation in sport amongst children and young people. Most schools have a nominated person responsible for co-coordinating activities and promoting the project.
Congratulations to Woodend Bowling Club. .
Woodend is one of our neighboring bowling clubs and launched their Youth Project with an open day on Saturday, 08th May 2010. The event was supported by Taylor's Bowls who kindly provided a number of sets of bowls, target mats and small prizes to the participants. Coaching was provided by David Gourlay, staff from schools in Jordanhil and some of the local club coaches.
The children were accompanied by parents, grand parents and other family members and included groups under 5 years old. We also managed to persuade some of the mums to have a go!!
